Welcome to the live transmission of the European Quiz Championships 2008 in Oslo.
This weekend of intense quizzing kicks off with the
National teams and Aspirational cup preliminary round at 17:30 CET.
We will try to get out preliminary results after each of the 6 rounds rounds. Stay tuned! The quizers are now seated and ready to start.
Round one has finished, and somewhat surprising it is the host nation, Norway, that is in the lead.
The table below will be updated as the rounds progress.
There are 15 questions in each of the 5 first rounds. In the 6'th and last round, there are 25 questions.
After 2 rounds, Belgium has taken the lead, continuing with a 10 points score despite the questions being somewhat harder.
In the Aspiration cup that goes on at the same time and with the same questions, Norway B is leading with 8+6 points, one point ahead of England B with 9+4 points.
Halfway, after 3 rounds, England have taken a 3 points lead ahead of Belgium. Finland on third. Estonia and Norway share the 4'th place. Note that it is the 4 best teams that qualify for the semifinal later today. Being among the top 4 teams after these preliminary rounds is ofcourse therefore very important.
After 4 rounds, England and Belgium seem certain to make it to the semifinal, England has 39 points, Belgium 36, Finland 32, Norway and Estonia continue to share the fourth place, both with 29, Wales 24, the Netherlands 22, Hungary 19.
Note!
These results as reported here are preliminary and unofficial, sometimes mistakes by the markers are made and it takes som time to get the score corrected.
Before the final 25 questions that make up round 6, it's still a close reace between Norway and Estonia for the forth and final semifinal seat.
England leads comfortably with 47 points, Belgium 42, Finland 37, Norway 34, Estonia 32, Wales 27, the Netherlands 26 and Hungary 20.
In the Aspiration cup, Norway B leads with 34, excactly the same score as the Norwegian A-team in the Nations cup. England B and "the Smurfs" follow with 33, Lars and the Medics have 28.
Final results
Teams that qualify for the semifinal later today, are:

Estonia had a rather weak last round and has to see Norway take the last semifinal seat.
So, England will Play Norway, and Belgium will play against Finland in the semi finals that start after the quizers have eaten.
In the Aspiration Cup "The Smurfs", England B, Norway B and Lars and the Mechanics quallify for the semi final.

Semifinals
The Semifinals will start in about 10 minutes.
The semifinals are now under way. 2 points are awarded for the correct answer in the first half, 3 points in the second half (10 last questions)
The semifinals will take place in two different rooms. We will only report on the England-Norway semifinal here.
After the flip of a coin, England starts by chosing a topic. They chose American cinema and start by answering all the 3 questions correct.
